The boy I raised for 10 years who died of Aids at 22
When I was teaching Jr. High school in the East Village of NYC in the 1980s I had this student who used to stay after school to clean the boards, take out the trash, etc. I could tell he wanted attention. Turned out he was an orphan living in a closet at a drug rehab on St. Marks Place and he wanted some adult attention. I took him in and he was my son until the day he died. He was an amazing kid but like a lot of kids who think nothing will ever happen to him, it did.
